Across Lancaster County, citizens and communities are working together to promote a concept called Complete Streets – streets that are safe and convenient for all modes of transportation and users of all ages and abilities.
Three organizations are leading the effort: the Lancaster County Planning Commission, the Coalition for Smart Growth, and Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. Technical assistance has been provided by the National Complete Streets Coalition, a program of Smart Growth America.
Each of these partners is working on different but related goals. The Lancaster County Planning Commission is helping municipalities adopt and implement their own Complete Streets policy and program. Over 650 states, counties, and communities across the United States have already taken this step.
Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health and its Active Transportation Team are working to increase the bikeability and walkability of local communities, and increase the number of communities with policies and plans that support healthy community design.
The Lancaster County Coalition for Smart Growth envisions a prosperous, vibrant community that achieves balanced growth and protects its unique heritage. To help achieve this vision, the Coalition provides education and advocacy support for Complete Streets.
